Since kitchens have many appliances, you’ll likely face a plumbing issue at some point. It’s important to be aware of the different issues so you know how to deal with repairs and prevent significant damage.
At Air Tech of Houston AC & Plumbing, we’ve performed a lot of plumbing repairs. We’re here to tell you about the most common kitchen plumbing repairs so you know how to treat and protect your kitchen.
1. Refrigerator Leak
A refrigerator leak is a common kitchen plumbing issue that is caused by the water supply line or drain pan. If the supply line is damaged or broken, water may leak out of it onto the floor. Similarly, if the drain pan isn’t positioned correctly, it can cause water to pool in your kitchen.
Water under your fridge doesn’t always mean you have a leak. If you’ve recently moved or installed your fridge, it needs to be leveled correctly. If it isn’t level, the coolant won’t be able to move easily through the coil. This causes a build-up of condensation that drips on the floor.
If the leak is a build-up of condensation, all you’ll need to do is adjust the front of the fridge so it’s around one-quarter to one-half inch higher than the back. A true refrigerator leak is often accompanied by problems with the appliance’s ice maker or water dispenser. To fix a leak, a plumber will either replace the water supply line or drain pan, depending on the cause.
2. Clogged Sink
Kitchen sink clogs are very common and, usually, easy to fix. Clogs develop easily since food scraps and grease are frequently washed down the drain in the kitchen. If you suspect a kitchen sink clog, check for the following:
- Bad smell coming from the drain
- Slow draining of water
- Standing water in the sink
- Gurgling noise from the drain
Sink clogs are one of the easiest DIY plumbing repairs. All you need is some baking soda, white vinegar and hot water. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain followed by one cup of vinegar. After 15 minutes, pour a few cups of hot water down the drain to clear out the clog.
If the clog still won’t clear, call a plumber to snake the drain. Although you can try to snake the drain yourself, it can be tricky. Air Tech of Houston is happy to help with any stubborn sink clogs.
3. Broken Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals are one of the most helpful kitchen tools for reducing waste. However, a clog or overheating can lead to a broken disposal. Your garbage disposal might be broken if any of the following things occur:
- Frequent clogs
- Weird noises
- Frequent resets required
- Slow motor/performance
The plumbing repairs required for a broken garbage disposal will vary based on the issue. You can sometimes fix a garbage disposal through cleaning or tightening, but sometimes the whole machine needs to be replaced. Remember: Never put your hand in a garbage disposal even if it isn’t running!
4. Dishwasher Leak
Dishwashers are a lifesaver in the kitchen. However, these appliances can be very frustrating when they don’t work properly. A common kitchen plumbing problem is a dishwasher leak.
If your dishwasher is leaking from the front, the latch or gasket may be broken. Your unit may also leak if it isn’t leveled properly when it’s installed. Other leaks may be caused by a broken or damaged drain line or water supply line.
To fix a dishwasher leak, it’s best to call a plumber. Dishwasher leaks are usually repaired by replacing the broken components or releveling the appliance.
